Teaching At The UW Dental School

May 24, 2012

I have been on the active teaching staff at the UW Dental School for 8 years. I had been donating my time at the Seattle Union Gospel Mission Dental Clinic for many years before that, but when asked if I would come back to teach I thought it would be a wonderful experience and one where I could really "give back" to my alma mater.

I am an Associate Clinical Professor and during the academic year I teach roughly 1 out of 5 of the graduating seniors and the juniors who are new to the resotrative clinic. ( which is where we teach crowns, bridges, fillings, implants, veneers, etc. ) The freshmen and sophomore dental students learn how to perform their exacting procedures in labs and yes....on each other when the procedure is warranted. By the time they get to the "real life" clinics where I teach they are fully aware of what to do and how to do it, but still have some lessons to learn on how to work on a real person. That is where I come in. We teach the students how to be safe, do perfect work and above all make the dental experience to the patient as smooth and comfortable as they can. I am constantly giving advice and checking progress and I thoroughly enjoy the whole process.

The UW Dental School is extremely well respected and is ranked consistently #1 or #2 in the country. The students there are top notch and are driven to exceed even their own expectations. It is an extremely difficult 4 year course and only the best students can thrive, but it shows at the clinics and I am proud to be able to help the new batch of dental students come into the professional world and be the best they can be.

Why do I wake up with Headaches? Understanding Temporal Mandibular Joint (TMJ) and Temporal Mandibu
By Dr. Annie Mazure-Schmidt March 10, 2025
The Temporal Mandibular Joint (TMJ) is a vital part of your jaw that allows movement of the lower jaw. It is a hinge that connects your lower jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, located in front of your ears. This joint is essential for functions like chewing food, speaking, and other everyday activities. However, when something goes wrong with this joint or the surrounded muscles or ligaments, it can lead to a condition known as Temporal Mandibular Dysfunction (TMD), which can significantly affect your daily life. It is estimated to affect 5-12% of the general adult population, with women having 2x prevalence to men.
